![]() ![]() Q: Have you thought about doing a cookbook?Ī: A little. It wasn’t just a job, it was part of my life and I am still friends with Carla and Mike. I am not 100 percent over the show ending. Q: Now that you are hosting a baking competition, any plans to raise the bar in your own Connecticut kitchen?Ī: My time in Connecticut is basically my most special time, especially in spring and summer. We’ll see how it goes but I would do it again. And as far as the baking show, nothing in TV is permanent. Q: As you add this program to your resume, what else are your working on and are there any new ventures in the future?Ī: I have a couple of projects in development but nothing I can talk about yet because I don’t want to jinx them. Instead, they play off one another like a depraved comedy troupe. ![]() Released in November, the band’s self-titled third album displays further growth, coupling improvisational jams with bleak rhythms and intertwining melancholy with menace.Ĭonsidering how dark their music is, you’d expect the members of Alice in Chains to brood offstage as well as on. But Alice in Chains silenced most of their critics with the 1992 album Dirt, a brooding disc of slow, savage riffs and Staley’s harrowing lyrics, which detailed his battle with heroin addiction. Starting out as a fledgling glam-metal outfit, Alice in Chains’ sudden move toward grunge after one album and one EP earned the derision of Seattle scenesters, some of whom dubbed the band Kindergarten, due to their sonic similarity to Soundgarden. They also lack the teamwork, and by the beginning of the second game, Staley has bowed out to play video games on his portable Sega system.Īlice in Chains may never make the WhirlyBall all-star squad, but they’ve managed to hang together, sometimes just barely, through almost nine years of hardship and continuing struggle. But despite a fine passing attack, Alice in Chains lack the rebounding and shooting ability to defeat their opponents. Even Staley, who minutes before was covertly mimicking and flipping off a drill-sergeant-like referee, seems to be having a good time. Kinney and Cantrell seem hellbent on defeating the opposing team, which consists of friends and bassist Mike Inez, who somehow didn’t wind up on the Alice squad. Alice’s drummer, Sean Kinney, came up with the idea of giving WhirlyBall a whirl, and although the other band members were initially reluctant, right now they’re all smiles. Before enduring the grind of formal interrogations, including Staley’s first major interview in more than two years, the band wants to have a little fun. Although WhirlyBall didn’t catch on as quickly as the Hula-Hoop, today a dozen or so such facilities dot the country, including this one, which is about a half-hour outside of Seattle. Here there were no fields – just opportunities ripe for the plucking. It’s a tale well worth reading although the adjective laden hyperbolic writing of the author can be eye-roll inducing. Reading more like a novel than a work of historical fact, The Radium Girls takes us through the long journey of what happened and why. The horrifying illnesses faced by these women launched numerous court battles and changed the course of history. They worked equally hard to bury the increasing number of scientific reports that said otherwise – and to silence the doctors and dentists who expressed concern that the “lip, dip, paint routine,” used in production meant that the girls swallowed a little of the glowing green paint during every shift. As more and more of these young ladies grew ill, the corporations that hired them went to greater and greater lengths to reassure the workers and the public that radium was harmless and that the problems lay with the girls themselves. Arms that had to be amputated because the bones were disintegrating. Bones that literally began to shrink and cause them to limp. Teeth that ached and had to be pulled, which created terrible, debilitating infections in their mouths. This narrative tells us of the initial excitement of these young women as they got the jobs, as they became caught up in the fun and sophisticated lifestyles of the factories that produced the watches and military paraphernalia that used the paint, their romances and the dreams each had for their future. Assured that radium in small quantities was beneficial to one’s health and completely safe, they saw no reason to be concerned that they literally shone. The radium powder they used as paint stuck to their clothes, hair and skin, making them glow in the dark, and many wore their good dresses to work so they would “sparkle” when they went dancing later that night. The positions paid more than three times the wage of the average factory job, and the young women who worked on those production lines dressed smartly, spent their evenings at clubs and parties and were generally considered the most glamorous gals in town. When the First World War came, many girls, some as young as fifteen, considered it their patriotic duty to work in factories creating these items to help the young men so valiantly fighting in Europe. By 1901 it was known to be dangerous if not handled with extreme care, but during the early 1900s it was used in paint to make watch dials luminescent, as well as to create luminous dials for the dashboards of military machines. In 1898, Marie Curie and her husband Pierre discovered radium. Corporate greed led to mass murder before our current legal protections came into play and perhaps no group exemplifies that better than The Radium Girls from the early Twentieth Century. ![]() ![]() We practised working on 1:1 correspondence (i.e. Pop named the colours and was able to count small amounts independently and to higher numbers with my help.
